Books on Wheels Pledges to Donate
10,000 books in 2010!
Books on Wheels is very happy to have a space to call home located at 302 W. Brookland Park Blvd. Richmond, VA 23222. With this new addition to our organization, we will be able to reach more people, offer volunteers opportunities to help with our daily operations, and organize ourselves in order to grow and do a better job at providing free books and bicycle repair to the public. Our Spring/Summer 2010 season is approaching fast, and in preparing for a busy season, we want to make sure we can do the most good in our communities as possible.
Since Books on Wheels is a publicly supported non-profit organization, we rely on the generous donations from individuals like you in keeping us literally running. So, we are launching a campaign to raise $10,000 to provide 10,000 books during 2010. For each dollar donated, you are guaranteeing that a child in need is getting a new or gently used book from Books on Wheels.
We are asking that everyone please donate to our safe, online fundraising sites NETWORK FOR GOOD Or PAY PAL.
And, as always, you can visit our Donate Page on our website for more details.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Please visit our website to see more about our donation campaign and we will keep you updated about the progress throughout the year!
“Books on Wheels is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that provides free books and free bicycle repair. As a mobile operation, Books on Wheels is able to travel to many different communities in Richmond and around the country to provide our services. Our services are available to anyone and everyone, yet we do have a concentration in working with at-risk youth in low-income neighborhoods.
Books on Wheels is dedicated to promoting literacy and maintaining healthy, active lifestyles, while providing much need resources to our communities that lack access to free books and bicycle education. Through literature and bicycle education Books on Wheels works to provide empowering tools that they can use within their communities. In concentrating in working with youth, Books on Wheels strives to encourage young people to read and to learn skills that they can use for the rest of their lives”.
Sincerely,
Shelley Briggs, MSW

Thanks to Ellwood Thompson’s!
“When it comes to the Richmond Community, two people that instantly come to our minds are Ward Tefft and Shelley Briggs. They stand for and support the same community elements that we view as essential for survival, thus, we’ve honored them with a nomination for being our first “Local Heroes”.
Ward is the owner of Chop Suey Bookstore, he’s owned Chop Suey Books since March of 2002 and sells more used books than we would know what to do with. Ward & Shelley together are the founders of Books On Wheels, a non-profit organization providing FREE books and FREE bike repair in an effort to promote literacy, alternative transportation and healthy lifestyles. Ward and Shelley work primarily in low-income neighborhoods with at-risk youth.
The two are also co-founders of Best Friends Day, a nine year Richmond tradition that brings thousands of people together from all over the country for a full weekend of music, fun, and the celebration of friendship and what Richmond has to offer. In addition to Best Friends Day, the two recently opened the Books on Wheels Thrift Store in Richmond’s Northside. To read the full interview with Ward & Shelley, come in the store and check out the Local Heroes poster dedicated to them. If you know someone who you think should be nominated as a Local Hero in Richmond, e-mail mquillen@ellwoodthompsons.com and let him know Who and Why!”
